     Fairport Rotary - History

In 1926, Harry Tinney, A Fairport resident who belonged to the Rochester Rotary Club, came to the conclusion that Fairport should also have a Rotary Club, and found interest from five other men.  On October 22nd, an organizational meeting was held and included others who had shown interest.  All present filled out application cards and paid the required $2 initiation fee.   Thus was born, in Fairport’s Sesquicentennial year, a 19-member club, the 2431st of Rotary International.

The first regularly scheduled meeting was held on November 8th, with 100% attendance and featured a presentation by Harry Tinney about disabled children and the purpose of fines.  Charter Night was held on February 8, 1927, with dinner served on tables arranged in the form of a giant wheel.  The 350 in attendance included Rotarians from many surrounding towns and District Governor Bill Campbell presented the new club’s charter.

From their first community project of raising funds to purchase band uniforms for the Fairport High School to the most recent project of a winter golf outing, the Polar Bear Open, the Fairport Rotary Club exemplifies the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.”

Club  President
Ruth Cronkwright

I joined Rotary 5 years ago at the suggestion of my step-dad Al Lehner who was an Oneida Rotarian. And I have not looked back.  I could not have found a better "home" for myself and my energies.

I am a native of North Syracuse, New York, went to college at SUNY Potsdam and came to Fairport from there.  I was an at home mom until my children were grown and then I began to teach pre-school at Pittsford United Nursery School.

From there I reached into the business of real estate and currently am the Branch Leader at the HUNT Real Estate ERA office in Irondequoit.

I have two grown sons, Jason and John who are married to Linda and Liz and I have three grandsons, Dave, Shane and Chase who I think the universe centers around.

I love to play tennis and golf, do lots of needlework and crafts and have great fun with most card games. I thoroughly enjoy my summers at our cottage at Sylvan Beach on Oneida Lake with my family including my brother and sister in law and my mom.

I have served my Club in a variety of capacities and look forward to my coming term as President for 2007-2008.  The fellowship and purpose I have found in Rotary nourishes my soul everyday.
