Make A
Difference Day 2007
On Friday October 26
Through Saturday October 27th the Fairport Rotary Club took
part in the National "Make a Difference Day". Rotarians
started by helping Safe
Journey
a “not-for-profit that assists women's and families who are
victims of domestic abuse.”
Fairport Rotarians Jim
Wandling and Dan Arbuckle are pictured posing (or is that just
taking a rest) instead of moving furniture.

Rotarians carved this
756-pound pumpkin, grown by local farmer Carl Greene and
loaned to the Club by the Town of Perinton. It then
traveled in the Fairport Village Parade on October 26,a nd
people were encouraged to contribute money for UNICEF, the
United Nations organization dedicated to stopping early
childhood diseases in developing nations.

On Saturday morning, Jean Wells and a
young friend posed with the big pumpkin at the Fairport
Village Farmer’s Market, where more people were able to make
contributions.

The final event for the
“24-hours-of-making-a-difference” initiative was a pasta
dinner held at the Fairport VFW Post, with proceeds going to
CARD, the Center for Autism and Related Disorders.

President Ruth Cronkwright and event
chairperson Jean Wells proudly display a plaque received
from Rotary District 7120, which deemed the
Make-a-Difference effort as the best such event among
district clubs. As a result, the Fairport Club has been
presented with $1000 to donate to the Rotary Foundation and
to designate a Paul Harris Fellow.
The 2008 "Make a
Difference Day"
was a smashing success for the Fairport Rotary and the
Community. A big THANKS to Jean Wells and her crew for a great
community event!

(October 28, 2006) — FAIRPORT — While
most of Fairport slept last night, Fairport Rotarians were delivering
coffee, doughnuts and bagels to the people who stay awake to watch and
serve over others.
Today, at the more sane hour of 7 a.m., Rotarians were planning to run
around the Fairport Farmers Market with a giant jack-o-lantern,
collecting donations for UNICEF. Some of them will paint the Perinton
Food Shelf before they meet up this afternoon at the VFW to host a
pasta dinner to benefit the emergency pantry.
Today is Make a Difference Day, when many Americans pitch in for
charity. (The Gannett Co. Inc., which owns the Democrat and Chronicle,
sponsors the nationwide event.) The Fairport Rotary decided to
participate in a big way to celebrate the club's 80th birthday, said
Jean Wells, community outreach and
development chairwoman for the Fairport Rotary.
"Almost any great idea has already been thought of," she said. "You
just have to find out who's doing it, how they're doing it and how you
can make it work for you."
The way the Rotarians are making the idea work is by working for more
than an entire day — not just a work day.
"We thought how great it would be to do something nice for a whole 24
hours to make a difference," Wells said. The time elapsed by all their
projects will actually cover about 29 hours, but because they'll take a
sleep break between 1:30 and 6:30 a.m., it'll all work out to about 24
hours.
The project attempts to touch every age group, starting with small
children in the village Halloween parade Friday evening, and continuing
with a party for senior citizens at the town recreation center midday
today.
In many of these activities, the Rotary is working with other groups in
town, such as the Farmers Market, which is donating pumpkins for the
senior citizen's party, and the robotics club at Fairport High
School, which is loaning teen muscle and enthusiasm for the same party.
"We have kind of a philosophy, at least in our club, of trying to serve
different constituencies," said Ron
Roberts, member of the Fairport Rotary for more than 30 years. .
|
The group also combines local
philanthropy with international projects, so its Make A Difference Day
projects carry out that theme, as well
But he
can't recall a time when the club has served so many constituencies and
worked with so many
partners all in the same day.
"I don't think we've ever tackled anything quite like this," Roberts
said. While the project is meant to be
altruistic, the Rotarians get a boost themselves in the form of greater
camaraderie, he said.
"I think it's good for the community and I also think it's good for the
club," Roberts said.
The Rotarians made a special effort to include those whose schedules
prevent them from participating in
workplace events, Wells said. Just before midnight last night, they
were to drop off coffee, doughnuts andbagels to people on the night
shift in Perinton and Fairport nursing homes, police, fire and
ambulance stations, and convenience stores.
"I thought nobody would deliver the food at midnight," Wells said
earlier this week. "Now there's six of us and we're having a little
party at 1."
Volunteers at the Perinton Food Shelf are feeling a bit festive
themselves because of the Rotary's efforts.
The pantry just bought the former fire station on Main Street where it
has been located for years, leaving little money to refurbish the
building or replenish dwindling supplies of food.
"Our volunteers are already volunteering their time to pack and sort
and deliver the food," said Andrea
Vittum, chairwoman of the Food Shelf's board of directors. "To have the
people come down and do the painting for us is a regular relief."
At the Rotary's pasta dinner this evening, participants will be asked
to drop off donations of food, and their ticket prices will go toward
the pantry, too.
"It's just wonderful what the Rotary's doing. It's unbelievable,"
Vittum said
.
For the Fairport Rotary, it's all in a day's work.

On Friday
Oct 27 and Saturday October 28, 2006 The Fairport Rotary Club
Participated In 24 Hours of Making A Difference
The project was headed
by Fairport Rotarian Jean Wells .
The project started
off with Rotarians leading the 27th annual Halloween parade in the
Village on Friday night at 6 pm
Throughout the night Rotarians
Lead by Jean and and her crew, t delivered donuts, bagels and coffee to
night service workers including the Fairport Police Department, Monroe
County Sheriffs, Fairport Fire Department, Perinton Ambulance, Advent
House (hospice) and many more.
On the Morning of Saturday October 28th
Fairport Rotarians led by President Elect Ruth Cronkwright painted the
ceiling, walls, and floor of the Perinton Food Cupboard. They were sure
not to paint someone into a corner with no way out.
Also on Saturday Members of the
Fairport Robotics Team
helped carve pumpkins with Seniors at the
Perinton Recreation Center. They have created Robots and have competed
against other schools in challenges of skills.

Saturday ended with a
Pasta Dinner put on by the Fairport Rotary members. Seen at the
right is Jean with her kitchen staff before the big rush begins
Rotary Interact (High School Rotarians) members giving Quality
Community service by helping out at the Pasta Dinner at the VFW.
These kids throughout the school year are very active in our community
and in International projects.
It was a fantastic
event and monies were collected for UNICEF and marked for Rotary Polio
and Measles immunizations programs worldwide. All left over food was
donated to the Perinton Food cupboard.

| The winner Rick Miccoli of
Fairport. Rick is a former Rotarian and past President of the club who
